Élections UE

Why does it matter?

During elections, independent and trustworthy media are crucial.

Access to quality media allows people to hear diverse opinions, take informed decisions, and hold those in power to account. Public service media are at the forefront of creating diverse content for everyone in society, with a mission to inform, educate and entertain. This supports an open society where citizens can make up their own minds and is an essential role for a strong democracy.

In June 2024, the EU elections will take place. This is an important moment to take stock of the achievements of the last 5 years and to look to what the next mandate could achieve. The previous term covered many areas that the EU has never regulated before.

Notably, the EU has put in place world-leading legislation on big tech platforms, which is beginning to address the power that online players hold over our daily lives. It has regulated media freedom and journalist safety.

There are still many remaining issues, and the EU must remain vigilant for new concerns that will arise for media and not shy away from continuing to regulate when the need arises.

What are we doing about it?

The EBU has assembled a campaign to inform the policy makers on the next right steps for public service media to thrive in Europe. To ensure that public service media can continue their critical democratic, cultural, and social role, the EBU advocates that the EU includes these essential policy objectives:

  • Safeguard independent media and journalists
  • Ensure that people cannot miss media that matters
  • Walk the talk with holding big tech accountable
  • Build a toolbox for AI and the media

We have further assembled a series of facts and figures that show how public service media are bringing their best for Europe.

Now is the time for policymakers to take a stand in support of the diverse and pluralistic media sector in Europe. The EU needs policies that support people’s ability to stay informed with reliable news and enjoy quality media. Independent public service media are ready and willing to be a key partner for the solution.
