A European Perspective expands in 2024

To kick off the new year, A European Perspective (AEP) welcomes Suspilne Ukraine and Ríkisútvarpid (RUV) Iceland to join the flagship pan-European newsroom. This collaboration marks a significant milestone, expanding the network into new countries that have notable geographic and geopolitical dimensions. The network has 19 participants in 16 countries. As of January 2024, there were 43 AEP newsfeeds, sharing original news reports across the digital outputs.

In 2023, the readership of AEP news increased by 19%, compared to the previous year. A further 17.5k stories were shared for other participants to publish. Most of all, 4.6 million people read the stories featured in the AEP newsfeeds.

Anastasiia Korinovska, Editorial Product Manager, Suspilne Ukraine, said, "Joining AEP is a testament to our unwavering commitment to fostering global understanding. In the context of current challenges, it's a great opportunity to share more content on digital platforms. Our cooperation will contribute to a wider understanding of the situation in Ukraine and Russia's war against Ukraine. At the same time, it allows Ukrainian audiences to see more reliable news about the political, cultural, and economic challenges and developments in Europe, as well as more inspiring and diverse features from AEP members."

Heidar Orn Sigurfinnsson, Director of News, RUV, commented “We truly understand the importance of presenting diverse perspectives to our audience, and we are thrilled to expand our content offerings and connect with audiences across Europe. We also realize how vital it is for the international diaspora in Iceland to have access to news from different parts of Europe, shared by the voices of the public service media in their native countries. We are honored to be a part of this global community and look forward to continuing to serve it with our diverse and inclusive news coverage.”

Justyna Kurczabinska, Head of News Strategy and Transformation, EBU, added, "We extend a warm welcome to Ukrainian and Icelandic journalists joining A European Perspective network. This project is about connecting our continent through trusted news. This is particularly important in a year that will see, in June, the world’s biggest cross-border election with more than 400 million people expected to vote in the European elections.”

Eric Scherer, Chair of the News Committee, EBU, and Director of News MediaLab and International Affairs, France Télévisions, noted, "AEP is an innovation project, reshaping audiences' engagement with public service news from across the continent. It transcends geographical boundaries, offering a unified platform that embraces diverse perspectives and enriches the information landscape for audiences across Europe."

Since its launch in 2021, AEP has grown year-on-year. Audience surveys in 2022 and 2023 found that 90% of respondents expressed interest in reading AEP news, confirming strong public interest. With an estimated potential audience of 245 million internet users in participating countries, the project is poised to continue making a substantial impact, reshaping the landscape of European media collaboration.
