Sustainability

Like all industries, broadcasting can reduce its impacts by taking a lead on sustainability.

Why does it matter?

The environmental impacts of broadcasting derive mainly from greenhouse gas emissions, energy and raw material consumption, and electronic waste.

Public service media are committed to reducing these impacts because it’s the right thing to do in a world growing more vulnerable to climate change.

In addition, the industry itself is exposed to environmental threats, such as energy security and related cost rises, resource scarcity, and extreme weather events.

What are we doing about it?

The EBU leads expert groups, conducts research, and provides training on solutions to broadcasting’s sustainability challenges.

Working together, we can find strategies that protect the environment and support economy at the same time.

Several broadcasters now have very specific 'green' targets in place and some cross-industry initiatives are looking to support broadcasters in...

Public service media (PSM) organizations have a responsibility to improve their environmental performance, and this should be at the heart of their mission. Energy consumption is one of the factors focused upon when environmental sustainability is scrutinised. PSMs can help by using less energy in general and increasing the usage of green energy through their buildings, productions and transport. Being in the public spotlight and a role model, PSMs can influence others...

Pension schemes are an often overlooked but potentially powerful aspect of turning an organization into an agent of positive change.
