Is it possible to make a difference in your workplace? Here’s why I think so.

17 April 2023

It really is all about our people.

With close to 300 professionals from over 40 different nationalities working with us here in Geneva and across our offices worldwide, we wouldn’t be who we are without such a rich spectrum of experiences, cultures, and backgrounds on our team. I love this diversity.

As Director of Human Resources, I can definitely say I’m a people person. And while most organizations have human resources operations, there’s something particularly special about the EBU. Seeing how committed our staff are to the work they do, I know I’m in the right place.

Even after nearly six years here, I feel just as energised about my job as when I started. The past three years were particularly challenging with COVID-19 followed immediately by the war in Ukraine. We had the third COVID-positive person in Geneva working for us and were therefore strongly advised by the cantonal medical authorities to ask everyone to work remotely late February 2020, before the official restrictions. And just when we thought life was getting back to normal, Russia invaded Ukraine and we pivoted once again to support our staff and our Ukrainian Member UA:PBC.

We’ve adapted individually and as an organization, from one day to the next. Our staff have pulled together and delivered incredible work despite the challenging circumstances.

The EBU doesn’t run on commitment alone, though. We want staff to have a voice and feel that they can shape our organization.

I strongly believe that the EBU is an organization where it’s possible to make a difference, whatever your role, gender, nationality, experience or department. We welcome staff input and have various forums for feedback, whether through our regular staff surveys or our monthly live Q&As with senior management.

For example, we listened to our employees about flexible working arrangements in a post-COVID workplace. We made fundamental changes to the way we work in a very short time. Our staff are welcome to work from home up to three days a week depending on their country of residence, and we continue to apply a lot of flexibility.

We have three dedicated staff working groups who tackle issues relating to topics that our employees have identified as priorities: Growth & Recognition, Work-Life Balance and Working Environment. We want to find better ways of working for all.

And we want our employees to feel fully supported in their everyday life. We’ve recently launched an employee wellbeing programme with courses on mental health, awareness, resilience, mindfulness and more. We are encouraging everyone to find a course that speaks to them.

In addition, staff are welcome to use our onsite gym or take a break in the adjoining park.

At the EBU, everyone has a voice. It shapes our culture, it enables us to learn from each other, respect and appreciate our different experiences and backgrounds. It makes for rich collaborations and creative thinking. It's what makes the EBU an inspiring place to work.

We’re always looking for new talent – and I’m excited to share that we’ve recently launched a new Careers webpage. You’ll be able to read more about life at the EBU, whether you’re launching your career or already a seasoned professional.

We’ve also launched our Talent Hub, where you can register your interest with us if you don’t currently see a job listed that would be a good fit for you. We’ll get in touch if we have opportunities that are well-suited to your skills.

I hope you’ll consider joining us.
