Shooting of Dutch crime reporter an attack on media freedom

We are shocked and saddened by the attack on the Dutch crime journalist Peter R. de Vries yesterday.

De Vries has been an investigative journalist for more than 30 years and has worked tirelessly to fight corruption and expose wrongdoing. He is a regular contributor to Dutch television and for many years hosted his own crime show.

EBU Head of News Liz Corbin said: “This is not only an attack on a brave and fearless journalist but an attack on the freedom of the media itself.

“Peter R. de Vries and so many other investigative reporters do an incredible job – shining a light into dark places and fighting for the truth and for justice.”

“We must do all we can to ensure journalists are able to investigate crime and corruption without jeopardizing their own personal safety.

“All the EBU News community’s thoughts are with Peter and his family at this difficult time.”
