Radio’s incredible diversity of genres, with something to appeal to everyone, was on full display from 11 to 13 October. Things kicked off on the Friday with Europe’s Biggest Dance Show. BBC Radio 1 launched the programme before handing off to EBU broadcast partners in seven other countries. Listeners throughout Europe heard exclusive mixes and interviews from the biggest UK and European acts.

But that was only the beginning! Friday also brought the broadcast from Paris of France Musique’s Générations France Musique, le live, hosted by Clément Rochefort and Katie Derham, featuring top-class young British and French musicians, the first of two bilingual music programmes in collaboration with BBC Radio 3. The next day, Clément and Katie crossed the Channel to present Radio 3’s In Tune live from London, with more up-and-coming classical artists.

Meanwhile, it was also a busy Friday in Potsdam, where the Euroradio Cultural Forum gathered together top management from cultural stations throughout Europe to discuss the challenges to, and opportunities for, radio in the era of podcasting. The same day in Potsdam also saw the announcement of the 2019 Prix Europa winners. In the Radio Music category, PR’s “The Man Who Sings from the Heart” carried off top honours, with a Special Commendation for SR’s “Ask the Music Professor”.

To top off this jam-packed weekend, Let the Peoples Sing, the Euroradio Choral Competition, held its finals on Sunday, 13 October, hosted by Catalunya Ràdio. Nine choruses from nine countries met at Barcelona’s stunning Palau de la Música Catalana. Presented by DR, the ensemble BarbAros not only placed first in the Open Category, they also were awarded the prestigious Silver Rose Bowl as the overall winner.
