World's best entertainment shows celebrated at 57th Rose d'Or Awards

13 September 2018

The best in TV and online entertainment from around the world has been honoured at the 57th Rose d’Or Awards in Berlin (13 September). Programmes from Belgium, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States were awarded trophies in 10 categories.

Among the winners were Netflix's royal saga “The Crown” which won Best Drama and Italy’s "Roberto Bolle - Dance with Me" starring the eponymous dancer who was present to collect his award, which took home the prize for Best Entertainment.

Belgium triumphed in two categories for Reality and Factual (Down the Road) and Game Show (Sorry About That).

The BBC was among the big winners of the night taking five of the 10 awards in the Sitcom (Detectorists), Arts (Betroffenheit), Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (Damming The Nile), Children and Youth (The Highway Rat) and Limited Series and TV Movie (A Very English Scandal) categories.

Sweden also took home a trophy for SVT's "Grotesco's Seven Masterpieces - The Refugee Crisis: a musical" which won Best Comedy.

Joanna Lumley said she was “thrilled and honoured“ to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry. “I can't tell you what it means to me,” she said as she discussed her career onstage with the BBC's Paddy O'Connell, who hosted the awards with German presenter Katjana Gerz.

German satirist and TV host Jan Böhmermann was also present to collect his Entertainer of the Year Award.

The ceremony, held at the Axica venue next to Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, was attended by around 400 industry luminaries.

The Director of Media at the European Broadcasting Union, which runs the awards, Jean Philip De Tender said that quality shone through the nominees in 2018: “As we near the Rose d’Or's 60th anniversary we have seen the very best in global entertainment content showcased here tonight.

"Nearly 500 programmes from around 300 broadcasters and production companies were submitted for this year’s Rose d’Or Awards. Our winners, and indeed all the nominees, tonight truly represent the gold standard of entertainment.“

Juries made up of industry professionals from 15 different countries shortlisted four nominees and then selected winners in each of the 10 categories competing for a Rose d’Or. Producers from nominated programmes were invited to a Market Forum on the afternoon of the event to network and discuss the making of their shows.

The Rose d'Or Awards, one of the world's most prestigious awards for entertainment programming, are given out by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
