Dunja Mijatovic elected Commissioner for Human Rights at Council of Europe

Dunja Mijatovic has been elected to the post of Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe.

Dunja Mijatovic is an expert on media law and media regulation who served as the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media from 2010 to 2016 and, previously, was one of the founders of the Communications Regulatory Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mijatovic will take office on 1 April 2018 for six years. She replaces the Latvian Nils Muižnieks who was elected Commissioner for Human Rights on 24 January 2012.

She will be the fourth Commissioner but the first woman in such a role, after Muiznieks, Thomas Hammarberg (2006-2012) and Alvaro Gil-Robles (1999-2006).
