BBC teams up with SR and WDR for live show produced by refugees

The BBC has teamed up with fellow EBU Members WDR in Germany and Swedish Radio to produce a live broadcast of the World Service' s ‘BBC OS’  programme from the Cologne studios of ‘WDR For You’ - Germany’s largest channel dedicated to refugees.

The co-produced programme involved refugees in the editorial decision-making, reporting and presentation of programme, to gain their unique points of view on the migrant crisis. It was simulcast across Europe via the EBU and streamed on Facebook. You can hear the programme here.

‘BBC OS’ also presented a week of special features focussing on the experiences of Syrian refugees as they build new lives across Europe and the Middle East.

The programme talked to Syrians now living in five cities – Malmo (Sweden), Berlin (Germany), Beirut (Lebanon), Cairo (Egypt), Athens (Greece). Through a series of half-hour conversations, OS explored the complexities of integration, from the female entrepreneurs running a high-end catering firm in Cairo and the band from Aleppo making waves on Berlin’s creative scene, to those facing uncertainty and discrimination in Beirut.  The features were presented by BBC OS presenter Nuala McGovern together with Lina Sinjab – herself a Syrian national.
