Mario Orfeo appointed new RAI Director General

Mario Orfeo has been appointed Director General of Italian Member RAI.

A journalist all his life, Orfeo worked for newspapers including Il Giornale di Napoli, La Repubblica and Il Mattino which he managed for 7 years before joining RAI in 2009.

Mario Orfeo was director of RAI’s newscast Tg2 for 2 years. In 2012, after a short spell managing Il Messaggero, he moved to RAI's flagship newscast Tg1, increasing the audience share from 22% to 25% after 7 consecutive years of decline. He also oversaw the digital transformation of the show which included introducing HD and a new, technologically advanced studio. 

Orfeo has received numerous journalistic awards for his work both in print and TV, from the International Ischia Prize and the Guido Carli Prize, to the Agnes Prize and the Cicero Prize. 

In January 2015, Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano appointed him as a Commander of the Republic.
