EBU "Radioheads" discuss youth strategy in London

The EBU's youth-focused "RadioHeads" met in London at the studios of BBC Radio 1 on Monday 27 February.

This one-day Workshop, chaired by Rhys Hughes, Head of Programmes for BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra , was attended by Controllers and Senior Managers from 21 “youth-focused” EBU Member radio stations.

The day provided a great opportunity to exchange and share ideas on strategies and initiatives; how they deal with a challenging media landscape on the “front line” - creating, innovating and experimenting to cater for young audiences.

Several topics were on the agenda and discussions were passionate!

Historically one of the main switch-on factors for youth-focused radio has been music. It still is, but competition is fierce, as music is available nearly everywhere these days, especially through streaming services.

However, Member radio stations are also innovating and facing up to these new challenges, reinventing themselves and revisiting their content offer, whilst still doing what they do best: broadcasting!

The place and importance of social media platforms were also central to the discussions.
