Vasil Maghlaperidze appointed Director General of Georgian Public Broadcaster

Vasil Maghlaperidze has been appointed as the new Director General of the Georgian Public Broadcaster.

15 individuals had expressed an interest in the position and a shortlist of five were interviewed by the Board of Trustees who appointed Maghlaperidze to the role.

Maghlaperidze has had a varied career in academia, politics, journalism and, latterly, television. After qualifying in Georgian Language and Literature at Tbilisi State University, he worked as a teacher for ten years before returning to his old university and becoming an Assistant Professor in the History of Georgian Christian Culture and Language.  He went on to found the newspaper Kavkasioni which he edited for a number of years.

In 1999, Maghlaperidze  became a Member of Parliament for Georgia serving as Head of the Education and Technologies Sub-Commission. He also worked as State Attorney and Governor in the administrative-territorial units of Georgia (municipalities of Dusheti, Tianeti, Mtskheta and Kazbegi).

Maghlaperidze joined Channel 9 as Deputy Director in 2012 where he also presented a regular programme on the channel. In the last two years he has worked at GDS TV as the producer of 2030.

Maghlaperidze succeeds Giorgi Baratashvili who resigned last year.
