World Radio Day

UNESCO World Radio Day is a global celebration of radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the conflict through building mutual understanding, and exposure to other points of view.

World Radio Day 2019 celebrated the theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”.

Radio stations were encouraged to create broadcasts providing a platform for dialogue and democratic debate over issues, such as migration or violence against women, helping to raise awareness among listeners and inspire understanding for new perspectives in paving the way for positive action.

Radio programming builds tolerance and overcome differences separating communities by uniting them for common goals and causes, like ensuring children’s education or addressing local health concerns.

For this year’s edition, we partnered with One Day One Choir and offered a package to radio stations around the world including:

  • Recordings of songs that celebrate peace.
  • Radio Voices and Stories for Peace: written material which can be used to showcase the role of radio in promoting peace.
  • A list of songs that celebrate peace, dialogue and tolerance which can be used on air.

"Radio provides a convenient way to encounter new ideas, new music and new ways of thinking, and also provides valuable company to counter isolation and loss.  World Radio Day provides a great opportunity to reflect on the power of radio."

Graham Dixon, EBU Head of Radio
