Euroradio Eurosonic Festival has become a favourite amongst artists, public broadcasters, music professionals and music lovers for showcasing exciting up-and-coming acts, thanks to its partnership with ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag). It is located in the Dutch city of Groningen. From 18 to 21 January 2023, the event will feature 30 acts from 24 European countries, all selected by Europe’s public service broadcasters. ESNS programmer Robert Meijerink answered our 3 questions.

Q: The Eurosonic Festival (ESNS) is back in person after two online editions. What are you looking forward to the most?

A: After 3 years and 2 online editions, I’m thrilled and looking forward to seeing artists, music professionals, journalists and music lovers back in person in the beautiful city of Groningen. ESNS is a conference and festival, and the best experience is of course: live! Live in person at the conference and live during the evening at the festival: discovering artists and new music from all corners of Europe.

In terms of the programme, what are this year's trends and particularities?

Post punk is still alive and kicking, and electronic music, rap, hip-hop, grime, soul & jazz are very popular. We also have several talented artists from the neoclassical and ambient side, as well as folk artists from Europe. It’s interesting to see a fair few non-binary LGBTQ+ artists. We’re also proud to welcome Spain as our Focus Country, and last but not least, we’re pleased to welcome 8 talented artists from Ukraine. 

In your view, what is the state of the European music scene, and how do you see it in the future?

The potential of the European music scene and its sector is huge, and there’s still so much to learn, gain and to improve upon. I’m happy to see so many talented artists around, and there’s so much music to discover, exchange and promote on this continent. Quality music is no longer coming from the bigger, obvious countries but also from smaller ones who until recently were less famous for exporting music abroad.
