Spanish EBU Member RTVE has won this year’s EBU Technology & Innovation Award for their ‘5G and beyond’ project, and Petri Karlsson from Finnish broadcaster YLE took the Young Technology Talent of the Year Award. The awards were presented on Thursday 9 June at the EBU Technical Assembly, hosted by France Télévisions in Montpellier.

The Technology & Innovation Awards encourage outstanding technical solutions developed by EBU Member organizations. The Young Technology Talent of the Year Award honours innovations or new concepts in media technology proposed by individuals at student or junior employee level. Winners are decided in a blind vote by the EBU Technical Committee. The Awards are given annually.

RTVE's long-running ‘5G and beyond’ project creatively leverages several key concepts and features of future mobile technology for a production and news gathering solution that can deliver many of the potential advantages of 5G with existing infrastructure.

CBC/Radio Canada came second with their project ‘New Maison de Radio-Canada featuring end-to-end Media-over-IP’, and SVT third with their project on ‘Cloud and internet-based distributed production’.

The tool, which is currently in the proof-of-concept phase, has the potential to facilitate planning, shorten production schedules, and reduce overall cost.

Antonio Arcidiacono, EBU's Director of Technology & Innovation said: "Public service media organizations often face cost pressures while simultaneously delivering amazing amounts of unique and relevant content. The only way to sustain and increase this output is through innovation. The Technology & Innovation Award and Young Technology Talent of the Year Award is a way to reward the efforts of our Members, showcase new talent, and share knowledge within our community.”
