Seven EBU Members have triumphed at the annual PRIX EUROPA media awards held in Berlin on 23 October.

The awards honour the best European TV, radio and online productions from the last year.

EBU Members scooped 9 of the 12 prizes awarded. Germany’s SWR, WDR and ZDF along with RTBF from Belgium, NRK from Norway, Sweden’s SVT and the UK’s BBC all took home bronze Taurus trophies and €6,000.

The EBU-sponsored Prix Genève award for the Most Innovative Television Fiction Script of the Year by a Newcomer was given to Nicole Armbruster and Marc Brummond, the writers of ‘Freistatt (Sanctuary)’ submitted by German EBU Member SWR.

The film tells the true story of an innocent young man facing a brutal education regime.

The prize was awarded by the EBU’s Head of Television Bettina Brinkmann: "The quality of the entries for this year’s Prix Genève was exceptional high," she said.

"Nicole Armbruster and Marc Brummond showed a great talent for script-writing and a deep understanding for human nature and the dark side of mankind. ‘Sanctuary’ successfully follows the tragic childhood of a young man, who is fighting for his right as a free human being and for his true dignity."

In total 212 submissions from 28 countries were nominated for awards. 259 jurors from all over Europe selected the winners.

Outgoing PRIX EUROPA President and DG of Swiss EBU Member SRG SSR Roger de Weck described the competition as “an oasis in which the beauty and diversity of the European media landscape with all its faces become visible.”

He’ll be succeeded by Cilla Benkö, DG of Swedish EBU Member Sveriges Radio.
