The Gospel accounts of Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, interrogation by Pontius Pilate and crucifixion are among the most dramatic events in the entire Bible. For centuries, countless composers have been inspired by these stories.

This year, Euroradio offers Members seven sacred music concerts devoted to the theme of the week before Easter, available in MUSNew as EURO/2018-2019/H/001-007. Two of these are available for live broadcast on Sunday, 14 April.

There is the timeless beauty of Bach’s St John Passion oratorio from Amsterdam, with William Christie heading a stellar cast of soloists, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Netherlands Chamber Choir.

Also live on Palm Sunday, listeners can discover other, much rarer Baroque treasures performed by the Riga Baroque Ensemble (pictured).

Other concerts in the Holy Week offer include Dvořák’s magnificent Stabat Mater, medieval and contemporary a cappella works with Ars Nova Copenhagen, and a programme of Bulgarian Orthodox chant.
