PBI Conference celebrates shared values

The annual meeting of Public Broadcasting International (PBI) has concluded that, while we may be very different as public service broadcasters, we hold many values in common.

The event was hosted by Radio Romania from 11-13th September and was preceded by the Media2020 conference which provided broadcasters from Europe and Asia-Pacific with the chance to share ideas and experience.

Both events allowed public service media (PSM) executives, analysts and experts from across the world to have an open discussion about the role, remit and responsibility of PSM in the 21st Century.

At the PBI conference, around 150 representatives from the USA, Canada, Africa, India, Japan, and Europe exchanged views and best practices on the independence of PSM, funding models, the role of PSM in a time of fake news, data journalism, the future of radio, and the importance of PSM for democracy and for defending cultural values and diversity.

EBU Members such as RAI, BBC, ORF, VRT, MDR, BR, YLE, ZDF, RTBF, Bulgarian Radio, Radio France, NDR and Radio Romania shared their experience with delegates and the conference was addressed by members of EBU staff on issues ranging from the role of radio to trends in media development.

EBU Director General Noel Curran said: “The PBI conference was a great opportunity for me to meet our Members and exchange views and ideas. It was the start of an intensive series of engagements I plan to have over the coming months, talking about what the EBU offers and how we can improve that offering. It was also useful to meet the Presidents of NHK in Japan and CBC in Canada and discuss how we might co-operate further."

The next PBI conference will be hosted by Korean PSM KBS in Seoul.
