The celebrated British tenor Mark Padmore will conclude his period as artist in residence with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with a demanding work written specially for him by the Austrian composer Thomas Larcher. BR is offering the event this Friday to EBU radio organizations as part of the Euroradio Premium Concert series.

"I wrote A Padmore Cycle for him," remarks Larcher, "because I was just fascinated by his way of singing, and his flexibility as a musician. He takes lots of risks that not every classically trained singer can necessarily imitate." The song cycle, which Padmore premiered with the BBC Symphony in London in November 2014, draws on text fragments by Austrian poets Hans Aschenwald and Alois Hotschnig, and takes the tenor through his entire vocal range, with dynamic nuances going from whispers to falsetto screams.

Looking back on his season in Munich, Mark Padmore observes: "I really feel very fortunate to have appeared so often with this fantastic orchestra! We began my residence with English music, by Britten and Tippett – not at all easy or well-known pieces – then we did Bach's St John Passion and Mozart's Requiem. All things that I particularly love: does it get any better than that?"

The rest of the programme by the BRSO, available in MUS, will feature such popular fare as Schumann's "Spring" Symphony and Ravel's La Valse.
