EBU launches Generation What Europe – first ever profile of European youth

11 April 2016

The EBU is proud to launch ‘Generation What Europe’, the groundbreaking transmedia project bringing together 15 EBU Members to create the first ever profile of young people from across Europe.

Generation What Europe opens a window into the hearts and minds of European youth.

At the heart of the project is a questionnaire. 18 to 34 year olds from all Europe are invited to talk about themselves by answering over 140 questions in their own language or in English.

The questions cover a large range of subjects subdivided into six themes; family, peers, self, society, the future and territory and identity.

The aim of the project is to offer unique access into the mind-set and realities of life as a young person in Europe today.

The 15 EBU Members taking part are BNN (Netherlands),  BR (Germany), Czech Radio (Czech Republic), Czech Television (Czech Republic), ERT (Greece), France Télévisions (France), ORF (Austria), RAI (Italy), RTBF (Belgium), RTE (Ireland), RTVE (Spain), S4C (Wales), SWR (Germany), VRT (Belgium) and ZDF (Germany).

“The EBU is immensely excited to be launching Generation What Europe,” said EBU Media Director Jean Philip De Tender. “This unique project will not only give us a snapshot of how Europe’s young people think in 2016 but also provide Members with innovative content and an understanding of their young audiences.”

Thomas Grond, EBU Head of Young Audiences added “Generation What Europe is a unique opportunity to hear the voices of young people from all the continent. Finally this generation can be heard with the support of PSM."

Generation What Europe will also see each broadcaster producing 21 video modules where panels of young people will answer the questions on camera. Their answers will be presented alongside statistics from those who have filled in the questionnaire.

An online map will also allow contributors to compare answers between different countries and regions of Europe.

Four full scale television documentaries about young people and their lives will also form part of the project focussing on the subjects of ‘Intimacy’,  ‘Becoming an adult’, ‘My job’ and ‘Me and my friends’.

Generation What Europe is based on an original format from Yami2, Upian and France Télévisions. 230,000 people aged between 18 and 34 took part in the first edition of the programme in France.
