First 8 journalists graduate from GPB Academy with help from EBU

Georgian Public Broadcaster’s training centre, the GPB Academy, has produced its first 8 graduates, taught entirely by the broadcaster's in-house trainers. The programme was set up with the aid of the Eurovision Academy and EBU Partnership Programme

This project, launched 9 months ago, was developed and led by Eurovision Academy Training Business Manager Frédéric Frantz who worked in close collaboration with the Graduate School of Journalism (ESJ) in Montpellier, France.

The first stage of the project involved selecting and training experienced journalists from GPB to become in-house trainers and pass on their knowledge. It also gave them the tools to construct a complete "Master Class in Multimedia News Journalism".

In the second stage, Eurovision Academy and the team of trainers laid the foundations for the first training programme. They selected appropriate candidates and planned the eight modules that cover key journalism skills. These were journalism fundamentals, ethics and deontology, news gathering, interview, using the web as a journalist, report, radio reporting, voice recording and sound editing, TV presentation and stand-up and being a news anchor. The criteria for assessing the journalists' work was also decided.

The first batch of 12 journalists were selected from 25 candidates from GPB. They attended the 25-day course in eight modules over a period of six months to ensure they acquired a solid foundation of knowledge.

After strict continuous assessment, 8 journalists took the final exam: Based on a topic assigned by their editor, they had to produce a radio, a TV and an Internet report. Their work was assessed by three people: two GPB Senior Directors and one trainer from GPB Academy. The top student was Tamar Gogesashvili. She received the best grades both from the modules and the final exam.

On November 12, 10 GPB Academy trainers and the 8 graduates received their final Eurovision Academy - ESJ Pro - GPB Diploma from GPB's Director General Mr George Baratashvili.

The second GPB Academy Master Class in Multimedia News Journalism will start in January 2016 with 15 new participants.
