EBU Director General to deliver keynote examining impact of “disruptive” technology on PSM

EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre will tell the world’s top media executives at the annual Public Broadcasting International Conference in Munich on 10 September that the successful future of Public Service Media (PSM) relies on more cooperation and innovation.

In a keynote speech detailing the challenges facing PSM from 'disruptive' technologies, such as online and on-demand services, Ms Deltenre will argue that demonstrating PSM’s contribution to society and involving young audiences are also key in safeguarding PSM going forward.

“When a disruptive development takes place even the most successful industry players may be hit hard, if they just rest on their laurels. And this goes for PSM as well. We don’t underestimate these disruptive forces though and we will continue to adapt our services. We should never take our success for granted,” Ms Deltenre will say.

“We are the most important cultural institutions in our countries. We are the most trusted sources of information. We are relevant and reach the widest possible audiences. We contribute to society more than any other media organization. The media industry is changing, but the purpose of PSM remains as relevant as ever.”

The Public Broadcasting International Conference, now in its 24th year, will be organised by EBU Member BR, part of ARD. BR Director General and EBU Executive Board Member Ulrich Wilhelm will open the Conference along with Lutz Marmor, NDR Director General and Chairman of ARD.

Mr Philippot will discuss with other media executives issues such as the role PSM can play in a globalized digital world where a smartphone is now sufficient to create video content and how PSM can best contribute to the digital connected society.

The EBU’s Director of Public Affairs and Communications, Guillaume Klossa will be in Munich to join other PSM executives on a panel exploring whether 'personalisation' is a 'no go' or a 'must do' for PSM.
