EBU Members are facing a number of challenges related to changes in audience behaviour caused by the disruptive power of the Internet and the proliferation of connected devices.

    Against this backdrop, Online Media was created to provide new and relevant services aimed at helping Members to develop and pursue innovative strategies to increase audience reach online.

    We focus on the areas of cross platform content innovation, social media trends and reaching young audiences.

    We produce the EBU’s only in-house cross platform format, the EUROVISION DEBATE.


    Networking & Knowledge

    The focus of our networking and knowledge exchanges is on identifying and sharing best practices around three key areas for audience growth:

    • How to connect with and engage citizens to create a two-way relationship;

    • How to package and distribute content online to facilitate discovery;

    • How to promote public service content online.


    Online Media manages five groups

    Cross Platform Steering Committee
    The Cross Platform Steering Committee provides advice and feedback on the unit’s activities, as well as helping to identify examples of innovation and efficiency for the Vision2020 best practices database. The Committee also acts as an editorial board for an annual Media Trends Conference. Contact:

    The Editorial Board was originally set up to provide editorial advice guidance for the unit’s flagship production. Contact:

    Social Media Trends Group
    The social media trends group looks at how Members and other broadcasters integrate social media into traditional workflows and how they use the platforms and tools of social media to engage with their audiences. The group acts as an editorial board for an annual social media trends workshop. Contact:

    Journalism and Radio News Sub Committee
    This group reports to the News Committee and maintains a close relationship with the Radio Committee. The Sub Committee acts as an editorial board for an annual Journalism and Radio News Conference. Contact:

    All of the unit’s activities are content driven and have evolved from the EBU's VISION2020 project, which offers guidance to public service broadcasters on how to adapt to the transformation underway in media in a way that serves their audiences best.



    EUROVISION DEBATE is a groundbreaking, cross platform production. Work is already underway to identify themes and partners for the next EUROVISION DEBATE.

    Around 55 TV and 9 radio channels broadcast the first EUROVISION DEBATE live on 15 May 2014. A further 88 websites streamed the programme live. On social media, the event hashtag #TellEUROPE was mentioned more than 130,000 during the 90 minutes of the TV show.


    >> Dynamic Journalism & LSE Polis Fellowship

    Our focus is on working with Members to develop innovative ways to engage PSM audiences. Expert groups exchange knowledge and help us to identify and anticipate trends, and we also obtain studies and carry out original research through our developing partnerships with academic institutions and journalism festivals.

    We offer a one-month fellowship on a competitive basis at the journalism think tank of the London School of Economics, Polis. The fellowship is open to journalists who wish to carry out a short piece of original research into an aspect of contemporary news media practice.

    The subject must be related to contemporary broadcast and/or online news with a particular interest in how media change is impacting on editorial, ethical and political and aspects of journalism.

    The VISION2020 project team has published a groundbreaking report about the huge challenges facing PSM over the next decade based on the input of more than 150 senior executives from Member organisations.

    It is the responsibility of the Online Media unit not only to ensure that the Vision2020 case studies and examples of best practices remain up-to-date, but also to lead the way by applying the Vision2020 recommendations to our own productions, projects and services.
