UNESCO Convention: Celebrating 10 years of cultural diversity

The UNESCO Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was adopted in October 2005.

The EBU, in cooperation with the European Parliament’s Cultural & Creative Industries Intergroup (CCII), will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention with a debate followed by a cocktail. A video showcasing original public service media will open the debate.

In particular, MEPs Pervenche Berès and Christian Ehler will invite to the debate:

Martine Reicherts, Directorate General for Education and Culture, European Commission

Christine Merkel, Head of Culture, Communication, Memory of the World, German Commission for UNESCO,

Frans Jennekens, Chair of Eurovision Intercultural Diversity Group, Head of Diversity at Dutch broadcaster NTR and

Jean-Paul Philippot, President of the EBU and Administrator-General of Belgian broadcaster RTBF to discuss:

  • Whether the Convention has helped to foster creativity?
  • Has it led to policies at EU and national level that support a diverse media landscape and build on cultural diversity as a force for social cohesion?
  • How can the Convention ensure access for all to diverse content in the digital environment?
  • How can the EU promote a model of cultural diversity in its international relations and trade partnerships such as TTIP?
